Plymouth Argyle are weighing up a move for St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson, as they continue their search for a replacement for the recently-departed Miron Muslic.

Plymouth have been looking for a new manager since the surprise departure of Miron Muslic to take over the vacant position at the German club Schalke 04.

Argyle were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, after finishing 23rd in the table. Muslic had only been at Home Park for four and a half months, having arrived in January as a replacement for Wayne Rooney.

Argyle had been reported to have already confirmed a three-man shortlist

Journalist Graeme Bailey has reported that Stephen Robinson is in contention"for the vacancy at Home Park but also that Jack Wilshere remains amongst the leading candidates with Tom Cleverley.

Plymouth acted quickly to try and get a replacement for Muslic, and it had been reported by The Sun that the club had narrowed down their search to a three-man shortlist; Wilshere, who was the interim manager at Norwich for the last two games of last season after they sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup, the former Oxford United manager Des Buckingham, and the former Watford manager Cleverley.

Robinson has been a success north of the border

The former Northern Irish international Robinson has managed in England before, having had spells at Oldham Athletic and Morecambe, the latter of which only ended when he left to take up the vacant managerial position at St Mirren.

And his time north of the border has been a success.

Over the 50-year-old's three full seasons with the club, St Mirren have finished in Scotland's top six every time, and their fifth-placed finish at the end of the 2023/24 season was enough to put them into the qualifying rounds for the 2024/25 Europa Conference League, although they were beaten by the Norwegian club SK Brann over two legs before they could reach the potentially lucrative group stage of the competition.

This is his second spell managing in Scotland, having been the Motherwell boss from 2017 to 2020, and he was also on the coaching staff of the Northern Ireland team that reached the finals of Euro 2016.

Figures from Transfermarkt

With Plymouth having already whittled the many possible contenders for their vacant position down to three, it may be that Robinson misses out on this position, but the fact that there has been interest from England in his services means that, even if he doesn't get this particular position, we could be hearing more of his name in the future when other positions become available.

But considering that Miron Muslic's name wasn't connected to the Plymouth job until a couple of days before his appointment was announced in January, perhaps it wouldn't be a complete surprise if they blind-sided everyone and brought in someone who hadn't been previously connected with the job again.
