Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will attend their Champions League game against Atletico Madrid today, according to The Athletic.
The 54-year-old has been linked with a return to Tottenham, where he enjoyed a successful five-year spell.
Spurs are in danger of being relegated, and interim manager Igor Tudor must turn the tide soon to avoid the unthinkable.
Many fans want Pochettino back at the club, but it is unclear whether it will happen.
Pochettino is in charge of the United States until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
He will be at Atletico’s stadium in that capacity to watch Johnny Cardoso, a player who could have joined Spurs last summer.
Tottenham had a clause in the deal that sent Giovani Lo Celso from London to Real Betis, giving them a shot at Cardoso, but he joined Atletico.
The American international took time to get going but has looked the part in recent games, and Pochettino will be there to keep an eye on his progress.
However, Tottenham must resist the pull of nostalgia. Pochettino’s first spell will always hold a special place in the club’s history, but football moves quickly.
Spurs cannot afford to look backwards while trying to rebuild their future.
The modern game demands fresh ideas, tactical innovation and a manager capable of developing young talent within a new framework.
There are exciting managers on the market who embody that forward-thinking approach.
Francesco Farioli and Roberto De Zerbi represent the new generation – progressive, tactically flexible and unafraid to reshape teams.
Tottenham need that kind of energy. Sentimentality should not drive the club’s next decision.
