Under-pressure Erik ten Hag faces a crunch clash in Portugal after Tottenham rout

Manchester United take on Porto tonight in what could be a crucial fixture for the Old Trafford future of Erik ten Hag.

OneFootball Videos

The Dutchman is under significant mounting pressure once again after another poor start to the season that has now seen them lose dismally 3-0 in successive Premier League home matches against Liverpool and Tottenham.

While Ten Hag is still said to have the backing of the United hierarchy for now, it is not too difficult to see that potentially changing in the days ahead with two tough away trips now on tap against Porto and Aston Villa.

United will surely have been considered one of the favourites for the Europa League before a ball was kicked this season, but got off to an underwhelming start when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Ten Hag’s former club FC Twente.

Porto - who currently sit second in the Primeira Liga table after finishing third last season - are also looking for their first victory in the competition after a shock 3-2 defeat away at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in their opener. The pressure is no doubt on United, however.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Porto vs Man Utd is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off time today on Thursday October 3, 2024.

The Estadio do Dragao in Porto will host the match.

Kobbie Mainoo has shaken off an injury scare to travel to Portugal, but Mason Mount - despite allaying fears of his own fitness problems - will miss out having missed training following a head injury sustained against Tottenham.

Ten Hag will be desperate for a result so will play a strong team, meaning the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt will keep their places in defence and Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes should start in attack.

Rasmus Hojlund is pushing to start after overcoming injury, while Harry Maguire will also return to the squad after a knock. There is is still no Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro or Tyrell Malacia, however.

Porto vs Manchester United prediction

United - and Ten Hag - desperately need a result but could not have asked for a tougher trip in the Europa League and know a significant improvement is needed to come away with any points.
