Thereâs a new leader in the Power Rankings Table as our top two collided on the Champions League stage this week.
The race for Champions League football in France is going down to the wire. Lille leap into our Power Rankings table after a run of form that has propelled them into the mix. The Ligue 1 side are unbeaten in 12 league games, winning seven, to rise to fourth. Theyâre breathing down Lyonâs neck as the season reaches its conclusion.
FC Porto are champions of Portugal again after beating Alverca and winning the Primeira Liga for the 31st time in club history, and their first in four years. Francesco Farioliâs side has been the top team in the division, outlasting a Benfica side that sits second, despite remaining unbeaten.
Another side celebrating, Inter Milan wrapped up the Scudetto last weekend. The Nerazzurri beat Parma 2-0 to be crowned champions, with goals from Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealing the title. Their win means Serie A has not had back-to-back champions since Juventus in 2020.
Michael Carrickâs case to be the permanent manager of Manchester United keeps growing. A thrilling win over Liverpool confirmed the clubâs place in the Champions League for next season and a job well done for the caretaker coach. Heâs claimed the scalps of Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Chelsea in his 14-game tenure, which has included 10 wins. The risk now is not appointing him permanently.
A 2-0 win at Espanyol as delayed what is appearing an inevitable Barcelona title win, but Real Madridâs problems are much deeper than that. Fall-outs, in-fighting in the dressing room, and the prospect of Barcelona securing La Liga against them for the first time ever this weekend mean Los Blancos are in a state of chaos.
In a title race of fine margins, have Manchester City handed the momentum irreversibly back to Arsenal? A chaotic game at Everton saw City control the first half without making it count, allowing the Toffees to fight back and lead 3-1. A last-gasp comeback rescued a point, but draws at this stage do not look enough.
Barcelona are nearly there. Three points at Osasuna have put one hand on the La Liga trophy, and avoiding defeat in this weekendâs ClĂĄsico will crown them champions. There are not many sweeter ways to win it.
Mikel Arteta needed a big week from his team, and he got one. Arsenal eased past Fulham in the Premier League to pile the pressure on Manchester City in the title race, with the Cityzensâ slip giving the Gunners a significant lead.
In midweek, Arsenal edged past Atletico Madrid to reach a first Champions League final in 20 years. Artetaâs side is on the verge of history.
When an unstoppable force met an immovable object in the Champions League semi-finals this week, something had to give. Bayern Munichâs dream came to an end at the Allianz Arena after a narrow aggregate defeat to holders PSG. The German giants will lick their wounds before focus turns to the DFB-Pokal final.
Luis Enrique has insisted his team are the best in world football, and itâs hard to disagree. PSG thoroughly deserved their win over Bayern and are not ready to give up their Champions League crown without a fight. This is a super team, and one capable of a dynasty.
