Looking at this Newcastle team v Liverpool.
The NUFC players hoping to build on the encouraging performance at Aston Villa on the opening day.
The only disappointment in that game, was that United didn’t turn their dominance into goals and a victory.
So, what can we expect the Newcastle team v Liverpool to be?
At his press conference on Friday, Eddie Howe gave us some information on who is and isn’t available.
No new injuries reported after that opening Aston Villa match.
Whilst Eddie Howe also revealed that Joe Willock was now back in training, returning earlier than expected after picking up an injury in pre-season.
Then also now set to be available for selection is latest new signing Jacob Ramsey.
Which means that only one player definitely won’t be involved in the Newcastle United matchday squad, Alexander Isak still not back in group training.
Taking everything into consideration, this is how I see the Newcastle team v Liverpool looking on Monday night:
Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, Anthony Elanga
No prizes for pointing out that this is the same eleven that started against Aston Villa.
I will be really surprised if Eddie Howe changes anything.
The team had a great shape last weekend and with Villa not able to force Nick Pope into a single serious save, Eddie Howe surely set to keep the same keeper and back four. That would mean Tino Livramento staying on the left, where he didn’t give Mo Salah a sniff at Wembley back in March, whilst at the same time getting up the pitch to deliver the cross that led to the winning goal.
Then midfield trio pick themselves you’d expect.
Whilst in the absence of Isak and with no new signings at centre-forward as yet, Anthony Gordon will be the false nine once again.
He did well in that role against Villa, Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes completing a front three who showed good movement. With both Elanga and Gordon also having pace to burn.
The only thing missing at Villa Park was clinical finishing, Gordon and Elanga in particular wasting great opportunities as United had a 16 v 3 advantage over Villa when it came to shots in the match.
The likes of Ramsey and Thiaw will no doubt get plenty of games as the season progresses but in the meantime it is great to see a much stronger bench developing, in every area but the obvious, as United still look to bring in one or two strikers and/or reintroduce Alexander Isak to the matchday squad.
