Newcastle United host Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday looking to close the gap on the European places, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting five points off the top seven with six games remaining.

Bruno Guimaraes’ absence is the headline team news for Newcastle. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the Brazilian contracted mumps on his return from international duty, casting significant doubt on his availability for this weekend’s fixture. The Arsenal game on April 25 is seen as a more realistic return date.

Fabian Schar is also sidelined after developing a foot infection that required surgery, with the centre-back expected to be out for another month. Emil Krafth remains a long-term absentee.

On a positive note, Sandro Tonali is fit and available. The Italian returned to the starting lineup against Crystal Palace last weekend after missing back-to-back league matches.

He is expected to retain his place, especially in the absence of Joelinton. The Brazilian will miss his side’s next two games through suspension.

Lewis Miley and Sven Botman also returned against Palace and are will likely keep their places, providing Howe with some much-needed stability in midfield and defence. Aaron Ramsdale is set to continue in goal.

In attack, much of the creative responsibility will rest on Anthony Gordon. The winger, who could be on his way out this summer, will need to be at his most incisive and threatening against a Bournemouth side brimming with confidence after their recent win over Arsenal.

William Osula netted his third league goal in just his second start against Palace last time out, and the 22-year-old is in pole position to lead the line once again.
