Manchester City could field interest from within the Premier League over their Treble-winning midfielder Kalvin Phillips, it has been reported.
Despite remaining at the Etihad Stadium following the summer transfer window, Phillips’ longer-term future remains a major talking point as January approaches. After three difficult season marked by injuries, loans, and limited involvement under Pep Guardiola, the midfielder is increasingly seen as one of the most likely senior departures in the coming months.
Phillips returned to the club following a procedure on his Achilles, which restricted involvement during pre-season and left City assessing his condition before making definitive decisions.
In the meantime, Pep Guardiola has continued to rely heavily on Nico Gonzalez in particular in central midfield, among several others, leaving the England international reduced to a training ground role without significant minutes or matchday opportunities.
Interest from Premier League sides has existed for some time, but Phillips’ substantial wages and City’s preference for a permanent sale have complicated the situation. As January draws nearer, that dynamic appears set to resurface.
According to the information of The Mirror’s Jeremy Cross, Kalvin Phillips is now prepared to turn his back on English football in a bid to revive his career, with the player ‘desperate’ to leave the Etihad Stadium in the upcoming January transfer window.
It is claimed that Premier League side Leeds United have enquired about re-signing the Englishman on a loan agreement, but would want their City counterparts to make a ‘significant contribution’ to his £250,000-a-week wages.
With such a deal described as ‘unlikely’ to happen, it is further claimed that it would leave Kalvin Phillips with ‘little choice but to consider offers from numerous clubs’ in France, Spain, and Germany.
From Manchester City’s perspective, the coming weeks will centre around assessing whether Kalvin Phillips can contribute meaningfully during the winter schedule or whether a clean separation is the most beneficial path for all parties.
The club are likely to remain open to loan departures but are conscious of ensuring the midfielder’s value does not diminish further. For Phillips, a move abroad could be increasingly appealing, especially if suitors continue to place financial restrictions on a deal.
A January transfer now feels highly likely, with the only question being whether Kalvin Phillips will return to familiar surroundings in Leeds, accept a reduced role at another Premier League club, or pursue a fresh start overseas.
