The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby was briefly halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
The Premier League said in a statement that the pause followed its on-field anti-discrimination protocol and that the incident at St James’ Park will be fully investigated, with full support offered to the player and both clubs. It added that racism has no place in football and that it will work with stakeholders and authorities to keep stadiums inclusive and welcoming for all.
On the pitch, Brian Brobbey’s last-gasp winner fired Sunderland to a famous derby double as they came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1.
Trailing to Anthony Gordon’s early opener, the Black Cats levelled through Chemsdine Talbi 12 minutes after the restart. Brobbey then struck in the 90th minute to clinch the points.
His decisive strike was his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th Premier League away goal this term.
