The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has ruled Brian Brobbey should have been sent off in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Sunderland Echo, a split three to two verdict found the on-field call incorrect and said the contact met the threshold for a second caution as a 'two-handed push'.

The flashpoint came midway through the second half on 12 April, shortly after Nordi Mukiele put Sunderland ahead at the Stadium of Light. As Tottenham tried to deal with a ball down the middle, Cristian Romero positioned himself between Brobbey and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to shepherd it back.

Brobbey made contact from behind, Romero then collided with Kinsky. Referee Rob Jones gave a foul but declined to show a second yellow, having booked Brobbey in the first half after a coming together with Pedro Porro.

Had the forward been dismissed, Spurs would have had a numerical advantage for the closing stages of a game they lost 1-0.

In the aftermath, Brobbey was targeted with racist abuse on social media, which Sunderland reported to the Premier League, the relevant platforms and the police.

The panel’s data also highlights a growing number of second-yellow errors linked to Jones this season, with five incorrect calls recorded, each judged to have merited a dismissal.
