The Premier League is all but guaranteed an extra place in next season’s Champions League, with the possibility of sending six or even seven teams to Europe’s elite competition for the first time in history.

UEFA’s new European Performance Spots (EPS), awarded to the two leagues with the best performances in continental competition, have seen England and Spain pull clear of their rivals, leaving Italy with little chance of overtaking them.

With Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Chelsea all progressing deep into Europe this season, England’s coefficient lead is unassailable.

Manchester City, currently fifth, would benefit most if they finish outside the top four, though Newcastle, Brighton, and Bournemouth remain in the hunt.

The number of English teams in the competition could still rise to six if United or Spurs win the Europa League.

A seventh would be possible if Arsenal or Villa lift the Champions League but finish outside the league’s top five.

With Champions League expansion from 32 to 36 teams next season, the Premier League is set to dominate like never before.
