Premier League ‘to trial’ goalkeeper time-out fix after Daniel Farke complaint | OneFootball

According to BBC Sport, the Premier League, EFL, National League and Women’s Super League are set to trial a rule next season aimed at stopping goalkeepers using injury time-outs as tactical pauses.

Leeds encountered the ploy against Manchester City, Brentford and Chelsea in last season’s FA Cup semi-final. The most high-profile incident came away at Man City in November, when Gianluigi Donnarumma went down after sustained Leeds pressure, which Daniel Farke felt involved feigning injury and bending the rules.

Farke said the tactic was within the laws and smart, kept his view on fair play to himself, and argued it was for the authorities to find a solution.

In February IFAB did not produce a formal fix, instead allowing leagues to run trials.

Under the proposal, once medical staff are waved on to treat the goalkeeper, the head coach has 10 seconds to tell the fourth official which outfield player must leave the pitch for one minute. If no player is named, the captain goes off. The trial requires IFAB clearance and, if approved in time, could be in place for the start of the season.
