Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, poked fun at Neymar’s situation by calling him Brazil’s first “home office” call-up during a SUS event in Belo Horizonte.

The remark came after a child at the event named Neymar as Brazil’s standout, prompting Lula to note the Santos and national team forward is not currently playing and to say he had seen the “home office” line online the previous day, according to Diario Do Peixe.

It was not his first public comment on the player. In March, at a World Cup trophy event in Brasília, Lula said he had spoken with Carlo Ancelotti, described him as very serious, and was convinced only footballers at 100% would be selected rather than on name alone. He added he was convinced Brazil would win the World Cup.

Neymar has not featured since 17 May. Santos initially cited calf oedema, while Brazil’s medical tests indicated a grade two injury. He missed Brazil’s World Cup opener and returned to training with team-mates on Thursday.

He did not travel for Friday’s match against Haiti. The forward should be available for the game against Scotland.
