Two Preussen Münster fans unplugged the VAR monitor during their 2. Bundesliga match against Hertha Berlin on Sunday, just as the referee was about to review a potential penalty.
According to L'Équipe, the 25th-round clash finished 1-2. As half-time neared, referee Felix Bickel moved to check a possible spot-kick for the visitors after a foul on Michael Cuisance, only to find the screen dead because two masked home supporters had pulled the plug.
Bickel waited for a reconnection but the decision was instead relayed from the VAR hub in Cologne. He announced over the public address system that a penalty had been awarded, and it was converted.
Home fans then unfurled a banner calling for VAR to be unplugged.
Later, the club condemned the incident, vowing to identify and prosecute those responsible and introducing immediate measures to prevent any repeat. Initial checks suggested it was premeditated, with a banner to that effect appearing in the home end shortly after the technical fault.
