Bayern Munich kickstart their 2026 with a home tie against VfL Wolfsburg. Already nine points clear of Borussia Dortmund in second, the current champions will look to make it 14 wins from 16 matches against a very unpredictable Wolfsburg side.
Before the winter break, Bayern ended the year with a thumping 0-4 win away at FC Heidenheim. The Bavarians have clearly continued this form into the break having recently just beat RB Salzburg 5-0 in a friendly.
Things couldn’t be better for Bayern right now, after 15 matchdays Bayern have the best record in the division’s history. With 55 goals, 11 conceded, and zero defeats, it’s hard to see Bayern not running away with the Bundesliga title this campaign.
What’s more, they have a fantastic record against the Wolves when it comes to matches at the Allianz Arena. In fact, Bayern have never lost to Wolfsburg at home in the Bundesliga – an outrageous 26 wins and just two draws.
The game on Sunday also marks head coach Vincent Kompany’s 50th Bundesliga game as a coach as well as Michael Olise’s 50th game in the league.
Wolfsburg have had their issues this season and recently dismissed former manager, Paul Simonis, in favour of Daniel Bauer.
Bauer’s current form at the Wolves is certainly better than in previous months. In their last five games in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg have won two, lost two, and drew one. On 15 points, the Wolves have ever so slightly moved away from the relegation zone. However, 16th place St. Pauli are just three points behind.
You have to imagine that Wolfsburg will set up very defensively in Munich, as they try to get the most from what will be very few chances going forward.
Bayern will be without Joshua Kimmich as the midfielder continues to recover from an ongoing ankle injury. Elsewhere, Manuel Neuer is currently recovering from a muscle tear, but could still be available for the time. If not, youngster Jonas Urbig will start between the sticks once again.
The Wolves will be without forward talisman Mohammed Amoura, who continues to impress with Algeria at AFCON. Elsewhere, Jonas Wind remains out following surgery on his hamstring.
