PREVIEW: Coventry look to seal title against Portsmouth

Coventry City will be crowned Championship champions tonight if they beat Portsmouth in front of a huge home crowd at the CBS Arena.

The Sky Blues were promoted to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw away at Blackburn on Friday night, thanks to Bobby Thomas’ late headed equaliser. Frank Lampard’s side have led from the front for the vast majority of the season and will be hoping to seal the league title and kickstart Saturday’s potential trophy-lifting celebrations.

Lampard has had his say on what Coventry will need to do this summer to survive in the top flight next season. “We have to work on it quickly now because of where we’re at, we have to be ambitious – we’re Coventry City football club. I know what the Premier League is, and it’s going to be a challenge. We can enjoy the moment for the next two weeks, but of course, we have to work behind the scenes to ensure we go up the right way.”

Meanwhile, Portsmouth picked up a 1-0 win over relegation rivals Leicester City on Saturday afternoon, a result which has all but confirmed their Championship status for next season. Pompey currently sits seven points clear of the drop zone, with nine left to play for.

John Mousinho’s side come into this one on a run of five games unbeaten and three consecutive wins, keeping a clean sheet in all three. Their survival can be confirmed tonight if they win, or if Oxford lose; if both sides draw, they will also be safe.

The match will take place this evening, and kick-off is scheduled for 7:45pm (UK time).
