With four games of the Bundesliga season remaining, Eintracht welcome direct rivals Leipzig to Deutsche Bank Park on Saturday. The Saxony club haven’t had much joy in Frankfurt down the years.
The backdrop
“When you’re up there, you don’t want to fall away – we’re going to give our all on Saturday,” said Nathaniel Brown after Eintracht’s 0-0 draw at FC Augsburg on Matchday 30. Hugo Larsson, meanwhile, felt the point at the WWK Arena “could prove decisive in the end”.
The stalemate left the Eagles in third place on 52 points ahead of Saturday’s primetime clash (18:30 CEST) at Deutsche Bank Park against direct rivals Leipzig, who currently have 49 points on the board. Ninety percent of teams with 52 points after 30 rounds of fixtures have ended up finishing in the Bundesliga’s top four.
“The games are getting fewer and it’s very tight in the table,” said Eintracht captain Kevin Trapp. “We don’t talk much about what might or might not happen. We approach every game on its own merits and try to win. We’re not worrying about the maths, we’re just doing what we can. The youthful composure we have in the squad is doing us a lot of good.”
The Frankfurt goalkeeper, who made his comeback from a long injury lay-off against Augsburg, kept his 59th Bundesliga clean sheet for Eintracht on Easter Sunday, surpassing Dr. Peter Kunter’s top-flight record for the club. The Eagles have kept three clean sheets in their last four Bundesliga fixtures – including two on home soil – and are looking to register three consecutive home wins without conceding for the first time since early 2023. Dino Toppmöller’s side have already picked up 30 points in front of their own fans this term, their highest tally since registering 33 points after 15 home games in 2020/21.
Looking back
Leipzig have yet to win in Frankfurt, having lost four and drawn five of their nine away meetings with the Eagles.
However, they have come out on top in both their home games against Eintracht this season, triumphing 3-0 in the DFB Cup before winning 2-1 in the league a few days later.
Löw at the wheel
Zsolt Löw succeeded Marco Rose as Leipzig head coach on 30 March. The Hungarian came away empty-handed in both his visits to Frankfurt as a player, losing 3-1 with Energie Cottbus in 2004/05 and 2-0 with 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2009/10. The Eagles will do all they can to inflict another defeat on the 45-year-old this weekend.
