Champions League action is back at St James’ Park. For the first time since 2003, Newcastle United will host Barcelona in their opening match as they re-enter Europe’s elite competition.
The last time these two sides met at the Camp Nou, Barcelona came out on top in a famous 2-0 win, thanks to Patrick Kluivert and Thiago Motta. That result still resonates with the Black & White Army today.
Barcelona arrive as clear favourites. After last season’s dramatic exit, in which they were denied in the 99th minute of the second leg by Inter Milan, they’ll be desperate to make a strong start.
There are signs of trouble, as Lamine Yamal has been ruled out through injury. Alejandro Balde, Gavi, and Marc-André ter Stegen are also unavailable. Frenkie de Jong is fit and included in the travelling squad.
Newcastle will want to make a statement. They haven’t been in the Champions League for a while, and many fans remember their group from two years ago as near impossible to overcome. The Toon Army are no strangers to causing upsets, as their 4-1 rout of PSG at home showed what passion and belief can do.
The Magpies have been picking up form lately. The striker issue that’s long plagued them seems to be easing, with their record signing Nick Woltemade looking very promising. Anthony Gordon is now available again after his suspension and adds much-needed spark to the attack. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s injury list includes absentees Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey.
UK viewers can catch all the action live on TNT Sports 1 & TNT Sports Ultimate. Kick-off is 8pm BST.
