Malick Fofana was somewhat of an unknown quantity before he completed his move to Lyon from Gent for a fee of €18.5m in the January transfer window. Upon making his debut for OL, it became apparent why a large sum was spent securing the services of the 19-year-old who was a relatively unknown prospect.

Despite his young age, Fofana gained a lot of experience for someone of his age in Belgium. Representing Gent, the tricky winger made 64 senior appearances, scoring five goals and registering a further 10 assists. Although his output was modest, it was clear that this is not what Les Gones were investing in. It was his overwhelmingly high potential.

Life in Lyon was rather slow to begin with for him. Minutes were sporadic but with the opportunities he was afforded, it was clear that OL had secured a real talent. On the ball, his blistering pace and dazzling ability to make defenders look inadequate became a real asset from the bench when he first arrived. However, the Gent academy graduate failed to turn this into goals and assists. That was until a match against Nantes in April where his first goal would seal all three points for his new club.

That first goal was clearly a confidence booster as in his next three appearances from the bench, he scored two match-winning goals against, Lille and Monaco, direct rivals for European competition. Following this pivotal moment, he hasn’t looked back.

Lyon could be forced to sell Fofana in January

Fast forward to this season and the Belgian has elevated his status within the squad from super-sub to first-team starter. Forming an impressive understanding with Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki, Lyon have been rewarded with a consistent and productive attacking unit.

Whether it be running in behind defences or isolating a man one one-on-one, Fofana has become a fan favourite among those associated with Les Gones for his ability to cause defences problems. This coupled with increased output has made him an indispensable part of Pierre Sage’s squad. His performances in the Europa League have particularly caught the eye with four goals and one assist in just six appearances. He has also been rewarded with his international debut.

Lyon facing financial difficulties will strike fear in those at the club that they may not be able to keep hold of Fofana. With high stocks comes high interest and the Belgian international is someone OL may be forced to sell if they are to stay in Ligue 1.
