Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has paid his respects to PSG for retaining the Champions League on the back of a cagey, intense final in Budapest. Les Parisiens prevailed in penalties after misses from both Eberechi Eze and Gabriel. Arsenal were on course for their maiden European crown courtesy of Kai Havertz’s 6th-minute goal, but the Gunners eventually cracked with Christhian Mosquera conceding a penalty near the hour mark.
For large parts of the game, PSG probed Arsenal for an opening and often failed to threaten David Raya. But Les Parisiens dominated throughout, and Arteta could only acknowledge the quality Arsenal were up against. “They are really difficult to play against. That’s why they are champions two times in a row. They are a top, top team, in my opinion, the best team in the world.”
Arteta – a former PSG player – also praised the ijndividual quality within PSG, and the manner of their manager, Luis Enrique, who is, like him, a former FC Barcelona player turned head coach. “What they are able to do with the ball, with individual actions – I’ve never seen it before. It’s not the plan to play in certain areas when you don’t have the ball, but they force you to do that.”
