Paris Saint-Germain were dominant in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter against Liverpool but they were not rewarded. Alisson, who made nine saves, said that he had “perhaps the game of [his] life” as he frustrated PSG before substitute Harvey Elliott, just seconds after coming on, provided the late sucker punch, meaning that Liverpool return to Anfield for the second leg with a 1-0 lead to protect.
However, PSG’s players, through their dominant performance throughout, have been enthused and will head to Liverpool with confidence next week. “We have our last chance and we are going to try and think about that in a positive way. Still doable? Of course, we are going to do it,” Luis Enrique told TNT Sports post-match.
Those comments were echoed by the PSG squad. “We will show the team that we are. We will show our character. We’ll win there (at Anfield),” Vitinha told Canal Plus. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who saw a goal ruled out in the first half for a slender offside, asserted that PSG “showed that [they] were a better team (than Liverpool),” which will allow Les Parisiens to tackle the return leg with confidence.
For Achraf Hakimi, it is about repeating Wednesday night’s performance. “With the same personality, we will go through,” said the Moroccan international in a mixed zone interview, attended by Get French Football News. There is no shortage of confidence, even if overturning a deficit against the runaway Premier League leaders looks to be a difficult task.
