PSG look to break the French curse against Liverpool

After a dominant first-leg performance that went unrewarded, Paris Saint-Germain face a big hurdle on Tuesday with their UEFA Champions League hopes on the line against Liverpool.

Luis Enrique’s men may be a goal down, but they threw everything but the kitchen sink at Alisson (32) in Paris and couldn’t find the back of the net. They have to on Tuesday to stay alive and history is not on PSG’s side.

The previous 15 Ligue 1 teams to play away from home against an English opponent in Europe all failed to emerge victorious, with 14 of those games ending in defeat for those French clubs.

PSG were the last French team to win on English soil though, defeating Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford in December 2020.

When you add the fact that Liverpool have progressed from each of their previous 14 Champions League knockout ties after winning the first leg, trailing by even a single goal seems like a tall order for the Ligue 1 leaders.

The Reds have conceded just once at home in the Champions League this season and are riding a seven-match winning run at Anfield across all competitions going into Tuesday’s second leg with PSG.

Les Parisiens have won their last three Champions League contests as the visitors but lost their only visit to England in the League Phase versus Arsenal this season ( 2-0).

PSG have advanced from two of their last three knockout ties in this competition when losing the opener.

Tuesday will be their third visit to Anfield in Europe with Les Parisiens losing 3-2 in 2018 and 2-0 in 1997.
