Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League on Saturday night, and Arsenal were left with the depressing reality of being one of few teams to outplay the trophy winners without reward.

Paris Saint-Germain have had an excellent season, and one of the best in their history.

The French team won Ligue 1 at a canter, almost going the entire season unbeaten, they walked to the Coupe de France, they lifted the Trophee des Champions, and now they’ve won the Champions League. Everything trophy they could have won, they won.

There were some setbacks along the way, but PSG were pretty consistently dominant throughout the season. Which perhaps makes it all the more depressing that Arsenal were one of few teams to outplay them and get nothing for it.

Sam Blitz of Sky Sports reports that PSG were beaten on expected goals in just six matches across the entire 2024/25 campaign. AS Monaco away, Bayern Munich away, Aston Villa away, and all three matches against Arsenal.

Arsenal only won one of those three games, defeating PSG in a League Phase Champions League match back in October. Sadly, despite getting the better chances in both legs of the semi-final tie, the Gunners ended up on the losing side each time.

It’s not hard to see why Arsenal fans are calling for the club to sign new forwards in the summer window, though the likely signing of Martin Zubimendi will help too.

Mistakes from Arsenal’s defensive midfielder in Paris were as costly as the missed chances by the forwards in that semi-final second leg.

The positive spin on things is that Arsenal know their system can work against Europe’s top clubs, and it’s just a matter of finding the right players to take advantage of the opportunities the team create.

But there’s a growing sense that time is running out to capitalise on the team’s current position by winning some trophies.
