Paris Saint-Germain were left clinging on against Aston Villa in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. Pre-match, Luis Enrique said that his PSG side had to be “prepared to suffer” and they did indeed suffer at Villa Park.
Les Parisiens raced into a two-goal lead on the night to go 5-1 up on aggregate, however, they then proceeded to collapse. Ceding control of the match, Youri Tielemans got one back before half-time before John McGinn and Ezri Konsa netted a quickfire double to give Aston Villa the lead on the night.
The Premier League side had plenty of chances to level the tie on aggregate but could not take them and PSG narrowly went through to the semi-finals 5-4 on aggregate. “It is a match that lived up to all expectations,” began Luis Enrique in a press conference attended by Get French Football News.
“An exceptional start to the match but the end of the first half did not please me at all. It wasn’t at the level of expectations that the Champions League demands. We conceded two goals in three minutes and after that it was very hard – lots of suffering […] I don’t think that we have ever been dominated so much. The opponent was intense because they had to equalise,” added the PSG manager. Les Parisiens did hold on, however, and booked their place in the semis.
