Jamie O’Hara has suggested that Noni Madueke could emerge as a serious contender to replace Bukayo Saka in the England side for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Madueke impressed during the recent international break, scoring one of the goals in England’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Serbia, a result that moved them closer to qualification for next year’s tournament.
Saka was absent from the September fixtures due to injury, creating space for other players to showcase their ability. In his absence, Madueke seized the opportunity and demonstrated his attacking qualities, raising questions about potential competition for places in the squad.
England’s squad for the September matches included four Arsenal players, and should Saka return to full fitness in time for the World Cup, more of Mikel Arteta’s men are expected to feature. Thomas Tuchel has shown an inclination to select Arsenal players for international duty, but O’Hara believes Saka may face a genuine challenge from Madueke, who brings a different style to the pitch.
Speaking on Talk Sport, O’Hara said: “Does Saka start? I know he’s a brilliant football player but Madueke, he’s very direct, and I like that at international level. When you’ve got a player who will just go at you, run in behind you. Saka likes the ball to feet, and he’s brilliant with it. I like Madueke and [Anthony] Gordon, I like the way they run in behind.”
His comments highlight the differing attributes of the two wingers. Saka is known for his technical quality, control, and ability to dictate play with the ball at his feet, whereas Madueke thrives on direct runs and stretching defences. This contrast could present Tuchel with a selection dilemma in the years to come.

Saka remains a key figure for both Arsenal and England when fit, and it is widely accepted that he would have started the recent fixtures had injury not ruled him out. Nevertheless, Madueke’s progress ensures there will be increased competition for the right-wing role moving forward.
When Saka returns, he will relish the challenge of proving his place once again, both at club level and on the international stage. The rivalry promises to be a healthy one, pushing both players to elevate their performances ahead of the World Cup.
