Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has had an excellent 2026 World Cup, and that continued on Sunday with a player of the match performance in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the round of 16.

Bellingham scored twice in three first half minutes to put England into a two-goal, and while they did concede two goals themselves, a penalty from Harry Kane ensured that they would progress to the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway.

Bellingham has been accused of not showing his best level in an England shirt, but he has been mesmerising at the World Cup. And on the back of his performance against Mexico, Micah Richards (via Marca) paid tribute to the Real Madrid man, whom he labelled a “true superstar”.

“Bellingham is a true superstar. He is always present, he always gives 100%. He has a confidence that some might call arrogance, but it is necessary. When he puts on the England shirt, he seems to go up a level.”

Heskey: Bellingham will be England’s talisman

Former England striker Emile Heskey also heaped praise on Bellingham, whom he sees as being England’s best player for many years to come.

“Bellingham was fantastic, he will become our talisman. He will be the guy who takes the reins of the party when he is needed. Not only did he score goals, but he also made a providential clearance. He gave it his all.”

Earlier in the tournament, Bellingham had been criticised over his form, although he has answered his critics in some style over England’s last three matches. Real Madrid will be very pleased with how their player has performed in North America, and they will hope that he can continue this into the 2026-27 season – especially as he is expected to operate in a similar role under Mourinho to the one he has at international level.
