QPR are dodging a big and risky transfer bullet but Middlesbrough and Kim Hellberg have taken the chance this summer...

Queens Park Rangers and Middlesbrough will both head into the 2026/27 Championship campaign believing they have reasons to be optimistic, but they also know just how unforgiving the division can be.

QPR are now preparing for their 12th consecutive season in the second tier, while Middlesbrough have also become one of the Championship's established names since their relegation from the Premier League in 2017. That said, promotion ambitions will once again be high at both clubs.

The problem is, so too will the level of competition, with several recently relegated sides joining an already fiercely competitive league. That means recruitment has to be targeted and close to all being hits rather than opportunistic and with lots of misses. Every signing needs to address a genuine weakness.

In a division where marginal gains can make the difference between the play-offs and mid-table, recruitment is essential. While both clubs are expected to be active before the transfer window closes, there is little room for sentiment, or risks via luxury additions. Squad balance will be every bit as important as individual quality, especially for two teams hoping to challenge towards the top end of the table.

QPR missed out on Myles Peart-Harris for the right reasons

From a QPR perspective, missing out on one reported transfer target may not be the setback it first appears. In fact, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise if it allows Julien Stephan and the recruitment team to remain focused on the areas of the squad that genuinely require strengthening.

According to a Football League World exclusive, Myles Peart-Harris had attracted interest from both QPR and Leicester City before completing a move to Middlesbrough by penning a four-year deal. There is little doubt over the 23-year-old's talent or long-term potential and Boro may yet reap the rewards if he fulfills the promise he has shown in flashes throughout his career.

However, there is also an element of risk attached to the deal given that he is still searching for consistency over a sustained period for any of the clubs he has featured for so far. The Chelsea academy star has shown flashes for the likes of Portsmouth, Swansea City, and Oxford United.

For QPR, though, the bigger picture suggests they have avoided committing resources to an area of the pitch that already looks well covered. Stephan has no shortage of options in the attacking midfield and wide positions, meaning Peart-Harris would likely have faced stiff competition for regular starts.

Ilias Chair, Koki Saito, Kwame Poku, Harvey Vale, Karamoko Dembele, and Paul Smyth are almost all young enough to improve and develop again next season, while being some of the quickest, most dynamic, and exciting attacking players in the whole of the second tier.

Only 10 teams outscored this young QPR side in 2025/26 and while depth is always welcome, the R's have more pressing priorities if they are serious about climbing the Championship table. Defensively, there is still plenty of work to be done, while central midfield also appears in greater need of reinforcement.

Additional quality in those departments would arguably have a far greater impact on QPR's promotion hopes than another versatile attacker. Above those making them a sturdier and steelier side, the goalkeeping department is another area that could benefit from attention, making it difficult to justify significant investment further forward.

Other parts of the squad remain less settled for QPR. However, none of this is to say Middlesbrough have made a poor signing. Peart-Harris possesses the technical ability and versatility to become an exciting player under the right guidance, with Kim Hellberg the kind of manager who likes a variety of attacking profiles.

That said, they need players with the consistent and regular output to put chances away and turn their dominance and territory into goals. He will hope he can unlock the consistency that has occasionally eluded Peart-Harris but he may well be frustratingly profligate like many others last season.

If that happens, Boro could have secured another wasteful player. If he develops and shows more consistency in his end product, they could have secured themselves an excellent long-term asset. For QPR, however, this looks like one of those transfer sagas where walking away may prove the smarter decision.

The temptation to strengthen attacking areas is understandable, but successful Championship recruitment is often about identifying what a squad truly needs rather than simply collecting talented players. If the R's instead invest in defensive reinforcements and a solid, dependable goalkeeper, they could ultimately be better placed to mount a serious challenge in 2026/27.
