As if his first contribution to the 2026 FIFA World Cup wasn’t memorable enough, or indeed his second, Julian Quinones clearly wasn’t finished there.
On Wednesday morning, the Al Qadsiah striker continued to fly the flag for the Roshn Saudi League on the global stage, when he struck a sensational opening goal to set co-hosts Mexico on their way past Ecuador and into the tournament's last 16.
Of course, Quinones’ sublime finish on 22 minutes at a packed Estadio Azteca would’ve come as no surprise to fans of the Saudi Arabian top flight; after all, the Mexico hotshot top-scored in last season’s RSL with 33 goals to land the 2025-26 golden boot.
Determined not to rest of his laurels, Quinones has transferred his club form to his country - and in some style, too.
He etched his name in history by netting the 2026 World Cup's opening goal, in last month’s 2-0 victory against South Africa, swiftly collecting a Man of the Match award as well.
Quinones followed that up with the middle goal in the 3-0 triumph against Czechia as Mexico entered the record books by winning all three of their group games for the very first time. And what a goal it was.

However, in the last-32 clash with Ecuador, Quinones only went and trumped it. Springing the offside trap midway through the first half, the Al Qadsiah star raced away before cutting inside to unleash an unstoppable shot high into the opponents' net.
Nine minutes later, Quinones was key to Mexico making it two. Spotting Raul Jimenez among the bodies bunched on the edge of the Ecuador penalty area, he nudged the ball to his compatriot, who finished fabulously to double his side’s advantage.
The 2-0 victory maintained Mexico’s 100 percent run at the World Cup, with Quinones deservedly picking up another Man of the Match honour. Although, true to form as we’ve seen in the RSL, he preferred to credit the collective rather than grab the glory himself.
"Teamwork is what matters most today,” Quinones said. “You can stand out as an individual, but that’s only possible because of the team’s great performance. That’s our mindset.
“We have to keep fighting. That’s how life is: you fight, fight, and fight until you get what you want. Thank you to everyone who supported us and believed in us."
