Rangers are on the verge of appointing Danny Rohl as their new head coach, less than a week after the German tactician publicly ruled himself out of contention for the Ibrox job, according to reports from BBC Sport.
The development follows the collapse of negotiations with Kevin Muscat, whose potential move from Shanghai Port faltered amid scheduling complications with the Chinese Super League title race. With Muscat unavailable until late in the year, Rangers quickly reignited talks with Rohl, a figure who had already impressed several key decision-makers at Ibrox.
Rohl, 35, built his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches following impressive spells at Bayern Munich and with the German national team, before taking over Sheffield Wednesday. His tenure at Hillsborough was notable for its intensity and tactical acumen, masterminding the club’s dramatic survival in the Championship before guiding them to a 12th-place finish the following season despite limited resources.
Rangers are seeking a swift appointment following the dismissal of Russell Martin on 5 October after a dismal start that left the Glasgow club languishing in sixth place, 13 points behind early leaders Heart. European struggles compounded domestic frustration, with the team winless in the Europa League and already out of Champions League contention.
BBC Radio Sheffield’s Rob Staton described Rohl as “a coup” for Rangers, praising his “aggressive, adaptable” style and tireless work ethic.
