If a recent report from Rangers News (as cited by The Daily Record) is believed to be true, Rangers are in direct contact with Hampus Skoglund’s representatives ahead of a potential summer move. They are also monitoring his former U21 Sweden teammate Casper Widell, and the Excelsior centre-back could also be roped in alongside the Hammarby right-back.

The 22-year-old defender, who is representing his nation at the U21 level, progressed through IK Frej and Hammarby’s academy ranks before breaking into the latter’s reserves in the third tier of Swedish football. Skoglund was soon promoted to their senior side, as he has so far appeared 80 times for Bajen across competitions.

Although both Rangers and Schalke have been keeping close tabs on the youngster for quite some time, the Glasgow giants are now accelerating talks to restore parity in the right-back role. James Tavernier decided to part ways after an illustrious career, and the club are weighing up alternatives, including Skoglund.

Why Rangers Must Rope In The Emerging Right Fullback

Besides Tavernier, Danny Rohl deployed Dujon Sterling and Max Aarons on the right-hand side of a ‘back four’ setup. Sterling impressed with his energetic runs and attacking prowess, but the gaffer could not rely on him week in, week out due to his persistent injury woes. Max Aarons, on loan from Bournemouth, failed to cement a regular spot and is now back at his parent club, as he is unlikely to return to Ibrox for one more season.

Meanwhile, Skoglund only extended his Hammarby contract until 2029, thus allowing the Swedish outfit to negotiate a decent fee amid reports of his £2m valuation. Rumoured interest from FSV Mainz 05, Wrexham and Girona could drive up the cost, and Rangers, given the ongoing discussions, must get the deal done at the earliest to avoid further complications.

What Would Skoglund Offer In Rohl’s Lineup

Skoglund is regarded for his energy, stamina and physical resistance, which allows him to maintain a balance between attack and defence. He often escapes high-pressure zones through driving runs. Also, his ability to shield the ball under pressure, resilience, timely tackles and ground duels demonstrate the intensity he offers at the back.

Nevertheless, the Swede’s aerial weakness and lack of accuracy in finishing and final deliveries must be addressed. But he offers tactical flexibility, allowing Rohl to deploy him as a traditional wide right-back, attacking wing-back, or an inverted option while lining the Gers up from next season onwards.
