Claudio Ranieri confirmed that Roma have made their selection of the new head coach ahead of next season.
The veteran technician spoke to La Repubblica about this season finale, his plan to retire and Roma’s new coach.
“I was super lucky: I wanted to be a footballer and I succeeded. I didn’t think I would become a coach, then I studied to succeed: in 1986 Vigor Lamezia called me, in Interregionale. I won’t miss the pitch: I have another project.”
“The new coach? My brother called me and said: “But will you at least tell me? Everyone asks me!”. And I said: “That’s why I’m not telling you, so the word doesn’t get around”. I also said to Venditti: “You’ll know on July 1st”. He said: “But if he arrives in July he doesn’t know the players”. “I’ll explain them to him”, I told him.”
“The agreement with the new coach is already in place. The president will decide when to announce his appointment.”
“Totti at Roma? Francesco hasn’t found his way. He tried to be a coach, he went to the Coverciano course, after four days he left. Would he be happy to be a club ambassador? I don’t know…”
“Roma’s ambitions? The Friedkins want to bring it permanently to the Champions League. Then, if you are there you can win or lose, but they have this dream.”
“Over the years they have put their trust in the wrong people. I hope I can help turn things around.”
