Barcelona’s game against Newcastle United on Wednesday night was filled with goals and action all along the way, making for a fitting second leg that sent the team through to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Catalans fought hard with the visitors throughout the first half, playing a game of equals and seeing the momentum shift regularly.
Newcastle United levelled twice after Barcelona took the lead on the night, leaving the score at 2-2 near the end of the first half. A Lamine Yamal penalty gave the team a late 3-2 lead in the half.
After the break, however, Barcelona took control of the proceedings with Fermin Lopez scoring once and Robert Lewandowski netting a brace to inflict a humiliating defeat on the Premier League side. Raphinha, too, added his second.
Barça Universal brings you the player ratings from Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle United.
The Barcelona goalkeeper did come up with some crucial saves to deny Newcastle in the first half, but also conceded two goals, one of which he could have saved with a minutely quicker reflex.
Nevertheless, he clearly was more crucial for the saves he produced than the goals he conceded. Left the field injured in the 81st minute.
While Cancelo was not as attackingly flamboyant as the previous game, he did a good job on the left flank, combining well with Raphinha and providing an outlet on the counter.
His distribution was decent, and individual quality stood out once again, and he only lacked in terms of his direct contribution in the box and his crosses.
The centre-back again maintained good coordination with Pau Cubarsi in maintaining the offside trap and performed solidly. While he could have done better to defend against the first goal, the second one was not his fault as much.
Did wonderfully to provide an assist for Bernal’s goal with a smart header into his teammate’s path. Started off the move for Fermin’s goal as well.
Cubarsi led the defence with his distribution and poise, but understandably struggled against Newcastle’s high press and rapid counter-attacks.
Could have done better to defend against the first goal conceded on the night, and he was often caught in troubling situations. The spotlight on him, however, was down to the team’s failure to press cohesively.
Garcia returned to the starting lineup on the night but left the field relatively early after feeling some discomfort, forcing the manager to bring on Ronald Araujo to play at right-back.
His departure, needless to say, stirred major changes in the defence and the tactics, and came as a massive blow.

Bernal was more imposing than he was in the first leg, but still did not manage to control the tempo of the game as expected by a Barcelona midfield in a high-stakes UCL knockout game.
The player did well individually in certain moments, including scoring a clutch goal on the night. His performance under pressure and Newcastle’s pressing system, however, did not give the team as much dominance and control in midfield as they would have liked.
Pedri, who usually shines at controlling difficult game situations, struggled to impose himself on the game in the first half and looked like a shadow of himself.
The player did not keep the ball as much as he would have liked, struggled against Newcastle’s press at times, and did not hand the team much control on the field.
Much better after the break, kept control of the ball, and immediately improved the team’s performance.
Lopez earned a start over Olmo despite the latter’s heroics at the weekend and played a crucial role in the team’s opening goal, finding Raphinha in space and timing the assist to perfection.
Scored the team’s fourth goal with a calm finish in the 51st minute after being set free by Raphinha’s touch.
Lamine Yamal created Barcelona’s first goal with a wonderful turn and pass into Raphinha’s path that set the move in action. However, he was directly responsible for the second equaliser as he handed the ball on a platter to the visitors.
Scored a well-taken penalty in the final minute of the first half to send the team 3-2 up at half-time. Assisted Lewandowski’s second goal with a great dummy and turn.

The captain started the game off with a bang, scoring with a well-converted shot and taking his time without hurrying the finish. His work rate was immense and almost handed the team a goal or two more in 45 minutes.
Raphinha also won the penalty at the end of the first 45 minutes that Lamine converted after he graciously handed his younger teammate the chance to score.
Assisted Fermin for the team’s fourth with a sumptuous touch and Lewandowski for the team’s fifth from the corner spot. Scored again in the 72nd minute to make it seven.
Lewandowski was dominated by Newcastle’s physical defenders for most of the first half. He did have one massive chance in the opening half to score. Unfortunately, his strike was not accurate enough.
Scored a great header in the 55th minute to put the team 5-2 up and seal the result. Completed his brace with another great finish minutes later, showing that he still has elite finishing in his boots.

The Uruguayan came on to replace Garcia at right-back and did decently in the position. Saw the first goal conceded come from his flank, but added aerial threat, stability, and leadership to the backline.
