Raphinha injured but targets 5 July World Cup return

Raphinha has suffered a right hamstring tear at the World Cup but is aiming to be back on 5 July, if Brazil reach the last 16. He went off in the 38th minute, replaced by Rayan, during Brazil’s 3-0 win over Haiti at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, a result that put them top of Group C.

Tests in New Jersey on Saturday detected a rupture in the back of his right thigh, the same area that troubled him this season, most recently in March with Brazil, which cost him five weeks and the run-in with Barcelona. The Confederação Brasileira de Futebol said he will follow an intensive treatment protocol under team supervision and did not set a recovery timeframe.

The Barcelona winger avoided being cut from the squad and has begun physiotherapy. Working with Brazil’s medical staff, he is targeting Sunday 5 July for a comeback, conditions permitting, when Carlo Ancelotti’s side are scheduled, barring catastrophe, to contest the last 16.

He will be out for at least two weeks, meaning he will miss Brazil v Scotland in Miami in midweek and, if they stay top, the last 32 on Monday 29 June in Houston.

If he does not make 5 July, and if Brazil progress, the quarter-finals on 11 July in Miami would offer another week to be passed fit. He is working individually with the recovery staff.
