Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida faces an uncertain summer after their option to buy reportedly expired, potentially opening the door for Leeds United and others. The Dutchman spent 2025/26 on loan from RB Leipzig.

Sky Germany reports that the clause, valued at just under £20 million, has lapsed and that Leipzig aim to sell him permanently this summer, with interest from Premier League, Serie A and La Liga clubs.

The same report says Sunderland remain in the race for the 25-year-old and are trying to negotiate a lower fee, which is why the option was allowed to run out. No decision has been made, and the upcoming World Cup could enhance his prospects.

TEAMtalk adds that Leeds, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have monitored his situation, while sides in Italy, Germany, France and Spain have also made enquiries to his parent club.

Voetbal International claims Liverpool, who attempted to sign him in January amid an injury crisis, have cooled their interest, with no current contact at Anfield after Arne Slot’s departure.
