Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona player ratings: Robert Lewandowski helps end Los Blancos’ unbeaten streak

Robert Lewandowski struck twice to send Barcelona six points clear at the top of the La Liga table in their 4-0 win over Real Madrid.

The Polish striker had a quiet first half as Barcelona weathered the Real Madrid storm. But he scored two goals in a matter of second-half minutes to put Barcelona in full control. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha wrapped up the scoring with their first Clasico goals.

As well as increasing Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table, the win also brought an end to Real Madrid’s long unbeaten run. Los Blancos hadn’t lost in 42 La Liga games and would have tied Barcelona’s record if they had avoided defeat in the Clasico.

So Barcelona’s win was twofold, and they had Lewandowski to thank for getting them underway.

Real Madrid player ratings

Andriy Lunin: 44%

Did make three saves but conceded four goals from a post-shot xG of 2.82 — essentially conceding 1.18 more goals than he should have. Only one of his shots came from inside the box too, with another an easy save from an audacious attempt to catch him out.

Lucas Vazquez: 49%

Didn’t get involved in the attack but did make one interception retaining possession and won two tackles. Crucially, though, he was dispossessed once in his own half, being the man to play Raphinha onside and lost the battle for the fourth goal.

One or two sentences on performance, highlighting key stats from score.

Eder Militao: 55%

He did manage to win possession through two interceptions and three successful tackles, the joint-most of the match. But he also won no aerial duels and made no blocks. All on top of being part of a defence that conceded four times.

Antonio Rudiger: 48%

Rudiger did make a game-high seven clearances and won two of his three aerial duels. But he still came up short defensively, winning possession in the defensive third just once. He also had a retention rate of just 83.33%, the third-lowest of La Liga centre-backs with at least 45 minutes on Saturday.

Ferland Mendy: 45%

Won one tackle and made two interceptions, with one clearance. But like Vazquez he was at fault for a goal, playing Lewandowski onside for Barcelona’s opener. Did also win possession four times in the defensive third.

Jude Bellingham: 49%

Bellingham was pushed onto the right side of Real Madrid’s midfield and it really didn’t work for him. The Englishman underperformed his xG by 0.27 and missed one big chance from a set piece. He also had an opportunity missed from Mbappe’s pass early on which was clawed off the line, but that would’ve been ruled out for offside. And the pass was a tad heavy in the first place.

Federico Valverde: 58%

Made two interceptions retaining possession and five final third entries. But his performance was let down slightly by a low retention rate of 66.67%. Valverde also remained on the pitch for the full 90 minutes as Real Madrid eventually fell away.

Aurelien Tchouameni: 58%

Taken off in the 63rd minute, Tchouameni made three interceptions and won three duels to help keep Real Madrid in the game. It’ll be no surprise that Real Madrid did fall away after he was taken off, with his retention rate of 87.5%

Eduardo Camavinga: 68%

The Frenchman played on the left side of Real Madrid’s midfield and was their best outfield player. Camavinga won three tackles during his time on the pitch, taken off when it was 2-0. He also won one aerial duel, and completed 91.67% of his open-play passes.

Vinicius Jr: 51%

Vinicius Jr was Real Madrid biggest threat in the opening stages and had 11 touches in the opposition box. But he wasn’t the goal threat Real Madrid needed, missing one big chance. He also completed just one take-on, which is uncharacteristic.

Kylian Mbappe: 49%

A Clasico debut to forget. Mbappe did think he had put Real Madrid ahead in the first half, but it was eventually ruled out by VAR for offside. And that was the story of Mbappe’s night, though the offside calls rarely made it to VAR. Mbappe was caught offside eight times, the most in a single La Liga game since 2016-17. He did still manage to hit the target with three shots and an xG of 0.58.

Barcelona player ratings

Inaki Pena: 82%

Put in a great display between the sticks to keep a clean sheet. Made four saves including two great stops to deny Mbappe in the second half. Prevented 0.49 goals and was fully deserving of his clean sheet.

Jules Kounde: 65%

Won two tackles and completed one take-on with four clearances. Also won possession three times in the defensive third, focusing on trying to keep Vinicius Jr and Mendy quiet.

Pau Cubarsi: 66%

Pau Cubarsi was the passing man of the Barcelona defence. The youngster had a retention rate of 89.09% and completed six long passes, alongside his one tackle won and two interceptions retaining possession. He had four successful offside traps too, which are awarded to the last defender when an offside is given.

Inigo Martinez: 77%

Martinez was a rock at the back for Barcelona. He made four clearances and won one tackle as well as three of his four aerial duels. In fact, he also won 75% of his ground duels, proving tough to beat. Contributed with four successful offside traps. Barcelona’s offside trap as a whole was very successful, catching Real Madrid out 12 times in total. And Martinez also set up Raphinha’s goal with a raking ball over the top.

Alejandro Balde: 69%

Set up Lewandowski’s second with a wonderful cross right onto his head, right between two defenders. Also stood firm defensively with two interceptions retaining possession and two aerial duels won. Also won possession twice in the defensive third.

Marc Casado: 72%

Looked at home at the heart of Barcelona’s midfield. Playing 65th minute, Casado had 70 touches, the most during his time on the pitch. He made two interceptions retaining possession and won one tackle, from five duels won in total. He also had 14 final third entries, more than any other midfielder in La Liga on Saturday. And, crucially, he helped get the ball rolling with a defence-splitting pass for Lewandowski’s opener.

Pedri: 60%

Was comfortable in midfield, with one interception retaining possession and one tackle won. He helped Barcelona keep control of the ball with an open-play passing accuracy of 91.23%. If it wasn’t for Pedri alongside Casado, Barcelona’s defence may have been under more pressure.

Lamine Yamal: 78%

Lamine Yamal killed the game off with Barcelona’s first, becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in El Clasico history. It was one of three shots on target the teenager had, with a non-penalty Expected Goals of Target tally of 1.08 — the second-most of any winger so far this weekend. He also had six touches in the opposition box and was a nightmare for Real Madrid as the game stretched late on.

Fermine Lopez: 48%

Had just 19 touches of the ball in the first half, with seven accurate passes. Won just two of his eight duels and was taken off at half-time.

Raphinha: 85%

He put the icing on the cake with a delicious chipped finish, having forced an error from Lucas Vazquez with his relentless pressing. There was just enough weight on his chip to get over Lunin and drop over the line before the defender could get to it. That added to his assist for Yamal’s goal and xA of 0.32. What a season he continues to have.

Robert Lewandowski: 79%

Lewandowski wasn’t too involved in the first half but boy did he take his chances when they mattered after the break. Scored two goals in as many minutes to put Barcelona 2-0 up, the first having beaten Real Madrid’s offside trap. Should have had a hat-trick but missed two big chances, including one with the goal gaping.

How do Squawka player ratings work?

Squawka’s new player rating system is wholly stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.

We tailored each score to the players’ respective positions using extensive research and expertise. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box, and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes, etc.
