Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde hit a first-half hat-trick as Madrid beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Champions League last-16 first leg. In L'Équipe’s ratings, he received 10 out of 10. It was the first hat-trick of his Madrid career.

The opener arrived on 20 minutes when Thibaut Courtois launched him with a precise pass from his own area. Brahim Diaz repeatedly drove Real forward, his surges preceding Valverde’s second and third, and he set up the third with a deft lobbed ball.

Valverde’s all-court display anchored a superb team effort, and he recovered countless balls. Diaz was given 8, Courtois also 8 after being decisive when City carved out their two clear chances.

Dean Huijsen, a surprise pick at centre-back, earned 7 after subduing City’s forwards.

City’s ratings were brutal. Savinho received 2 after a near-invisible first half and was withdrawn at the break. Nico O’Reilly was marked 3, beaten for the first goal, lost Valverde for the second and reacted too slowly for the third.

Gianluigi Donnarumma also got 3, saving the penalty he conceded but falling short overall. Erling Haaland was given 3, lively for the opening quarter-hour then nothing thereafter.
