Real Madrid are alleged to have misdiagnosed Kylian Mbappé’s knee problem by examining the wrong joint. The episode is said to have contributed to the sacking of their medical staff early this year, in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup.
RMC Sport reports that the forward first felt discomfort in his left knee late in 2025 and was unhappy with the initial assessment in Madrid. He travelled to France, where a specialist found serious failings in the evaluation.
The error was said to have influenced the club’s decision to dismiss their entire medical team, a move also explained by an accumulation of injuries. The situation was described as a disgrace.
The most striking claim concerns a clinical mix-up, with doctors reportedly focusing on the wrong knee. That would explain the lack of improvement and why Mbappé played while unaware of the full extent of the problem. It was suggested the issue could have been far more serious.
Seeking answers, Mbappé went to Paris to see Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, who ruled out surgery and prescribed 15 days of muscular treatment. He returned to action without pain.
Mbbappé later said he had fully recovered and that understanding the cause was crucial to planning his comeback.
