The ongoing crisis at Tottenham Hotspur, who are flirting with relegation, could have severe ramifications for several star players at the club.

One of them is Cristian Romero, who has recently been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

The Argentine ranks among some of the finest defenders in the Premier League, and given the condition at Spurs, it won’t be surprising to see him leave the club in the coming summer.

Romero already has a release clause worth €70 million. But there is a steep €10 million discount that is applicable to three big Spanish teams, including Real Madrid.

Real Madrid can sign Romero for €60 million

According to MARCA, Romero has a special release clause embedded in his Spurs contract that would allow him to join Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid for just €60 million.

This accounts for a €10 milllion discount to his original release clause worth €70 million, thus giving a team like Real Madrid an opportunity to sign a top defender on a cut-price deal.

This does bode well for Los Blancos, who had harboured the hopes of signing Nico Schlotterbeck this summer.

But reports suggest the German is likely to renew his contract at Borussia Dortmund, leaving Real Madrid with yet another opportunity lost.

But in Romero, the Spanish giants could find themselves a defender who has the leadership and experience to become a real asset to the Real Madrid backline.

Even at Spurs, Romero has done a great deal to stabilise the backline, notwithstanding the poor 2025/26 campaign, where nothing has clicked for the North London outfit.

A fee of €60 million is quite reasonable for a player who has over 150 games to his belt at Tottenham, along with additional experience in Serie A.
