According to an update from Real Madrid Confidencial, the Spanish giants appear to have made a major change in their transfer strategy for the centre-back position.

Dayot Upamecano has now overtaken Ibrahima Konate as the club’s preferred defensive target.

The French defender from Bayern Munich is being closely monitored by Madrid, who see him as a strong and affordable option to reinforce their backline.

Financial disagreement with Bayern

Reports suggest that while Upamecano’s contract with Bayern expires in 2026, negotiations for an extension have reached a standstill.

The 26-year-old is reportedly demanding a €20 million renewal bonus, while Real Madrid are prepared to use that same amount as a signing fee to bring him to the Spanish capital.

It is known that Real Madrid will make a defensive signing in the summer of 2026. This is because David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are showing signs of physical wear, prompting Madrid’s sporting department to search for a younger, more dependable defender.

In this regard, Upamecano fits the profile perfectly as he is strong, quick, and has plenty of experience at both club and international levels.

Konate option fades

Meanwhile, the possibility of signing Konate has significantly weakened. The Liverpool defender’s recurring injuries have raised doubts about his reliability, pushing him down Madrid’s list of options.

As a result, Upamecano has emerged as the most stable and realistic candidate to strengthen the defence alongside Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen.

Another advantage for Real Madrid is Upamecano’s close friendship with Kylian Mbappe from their time together in the French national team.

Real Madrid ready to pounce

In Germany, there is growing speculation that Upamecano himself is uncertain about his future at Bayern.

The club would prefer to keep him, but his hesitation, coupled with recent inconsistency and minor injuries, has cast doubt over his long-term commitment.

Real Madrid see this as an opportunity. For a fee of around €20 million, the club could secure a proven international defender entering his prime years.

If all goes according to plan, Upamecano could be wearing the white shirt next season.
