The Real Madrid defence is going through a critical period right now.

Having dealt with injuries for the majority of the season, the team is finally starting to get back some of its regular starters, and this may have short-term ramifications.

The future of Raul Asencio, in particular, has come into question lately, with Real Madrid reportedly prepared to sell him in the coming summer.

Why are Real Madrid considering selling Asencio?

According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is strongly considering the sale of Asencio.

There are a few reasons why such a move is being considered, one of them being the late resurgence of Antonio Rudiger.

After struggling with fitness for the major part of the campaign, the veteran defender is really starting to come into his own, with many expecting him to extend his contract for another year.

Meanwhile, Dean Huijsen has impressed a lot with his recent form, leaving even Florentino Perez amused. He has now become a critical part of the Real Madrid defensive line alongside Rudiger.

Real Madrid, for their part, are also looking for a new centre-back in the coming summer, whereas Eder Militao is destined to stay at the club.

Keeping all these things in mind, there is a strong possibility Asencio could become the fifth-choice centre-back at Real Madrid next season.

This is not something the club are willing to consider. Therefore, it is looking increasingly likely that the Spaniard might be allowed to move on after the end of the season.

Nothing has been set in stone, though, and the coming couple of months could still be interesting, especially if Asencio manages to make a late impact as well.
