A fresh update from OK Diario reveals that the upcoming clash against Girona is effectively a live audition for Ferland Mendy to earn a place in Real Madrid’s starting XI against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.
It must be noted that Mendy’s return from injury is being treated with extreme caution.
Within the club, there is full awareness of his importance, but also a recognition that his physical condition has often been unpredictable.
That uncertainty is exactly why Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to manage his minutes carefully against Girona.
The plan is for Mendy to feature, but only in a controlled manner. Every minute will be monitored, every movement assessed.
The objective is not to push him, but to prepare him.
This means Real Madrid are effectively using this match as a conditioning exercise ahead of what will be their most important game of the season.
And make no mistake, if Mendy proves his fitness, his place in the starting XI in Munich is already decided.
To put it in perspective, this is not a tactical debate. It is a certainty within the coaching staff.

This is because when fully fit, Mendy is considered the most reliable defensive option at left-back.
His ability to shut down wingers is something Madrid simply cannot replicate elsewhere in the squad.
That importance becomes even clearer when looking at the challenge awaiting them.
In the first leg, Michael Olise caused significant problems, exposing defensive vulnerabilities that Madrid cannot afford to repeat.
Containing him in the return leg will be critical and that responsibility is expected to fall directly on Mendy. This is where his value becomes undeniable.
The concern, however, remains his availability.
At Valdebebas, there is an understanding that Mendy’s impact is massive when he plays, but also that he cannot always be relied upon consistently throughout a season.
That is precisely why the upcoming Girona fixture carries such weight.
