Real Madrid’s defensive frailties were once again laid bare this past weekend as Barcelona brutally exposed them in the harrowing 2-5 Spanish Super Cup defeat.

With no Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal due to ACL injuries, Carlo Ancelotti has been using Lucas Vazquez and Aurelien Tchouameni in the defensive line and both struggled to no end against Barça.

Given the situation, Real Madrid are considering signing a new right-back in January, with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold the main target.

However, there are no plans to bring in a new centre-back, partly due to the emergence of Raul Asencio and also because David Alaba is all set to return.

Minutes for Alaba soon

Indeed, MARCA reports that Alaba is now all set to be reintroduced into the game dynamics after more than a year out of action due to an ACL rupture.

The veteran Asustrian entering a pivotal phase as he prepares to rejoin the action and become the reinvigorated player Ancelotti envisions for Real Madrid.

After more than a year away from the pitch, the centre-back is now fit to receive full medical clearance and begin accumulating playing time. His inclusion in the squad for the Spanish Super Cup was a clear signal that he is fully reintegrated into the team’s dynamics.

Although he did not participate in either match, it was the final step before his much-anticipated and crucial return, especially given the precarious state of Real Madrid’s defence.

Return possible vs Celta Vigo?

The roadmap for Alaba has been set for weeks, and with the Spanish Super Cup behind them, his future matchday inclusions will come with the possibility of minutes on the pitch.

Ancelotti is expected to receive the green light to consider the Austrian defender for selection again, beginning with Thursday’s match against Celta Vigo, should the coach deem it appropriate.

The next six matches – against Celta Vigo, Las Palmas, RB Salzburg, Real Valladolid, Brest, and Espanyol – are spread across three weeks, providing ample chances for Alaba to re-establish his presence.

Initially expected to feature as a substitute, the former Bayern Munich captain might even earn a starting role if his progress aligns with expectations.
