Real Madrid locker room baffled by treatment from referees in La Liga – report

Real Madrid’s recent win over Alaves sparked massive uproar over the dual standards in refereeing of La Liga games. After all, the match official’s decisions on the night were inexplicable for the most part.

On the night, Alaves recorded ten fouls and did not see a single yellow card from the referee while Real Madrid saw four bookings for just seven fouls, three of which did not even come for a physical challenge.

After the rules of La Liga were tweaked, mere protests on the field have become bookable offences and Real Madrid are bewildered by the strict enforcement against them as revealed by AS.

The most punished

As relayed by the Spanish outlet, Real Madrid have committed 61 fouls this season and have seen 15 yellow cards and one red card in the process.

Their opponents cumulatively, meanwhile, have only received nine bookings for 86 challenges.

What is more astounding is how often the team’s players are being booked for protesting. Statistically, Real Madrid are the club that has been punished the most for questioning the referee with nine cards while Vinicius leads the individual tally with three.

As per the new rules, only the captain is permitted to converse with the referee and protest any decision.

Yet, Luka Modric was shown yellow last night for protesting despite wearing the captain’s armband in what can only be described as puzzling.

“It’s complicated to respond to this. If the captain was yellow-carded for talking… there is only one person who can respond, and that is the referee,” Carlo Ancelotti said about the incident after last night’s game.

Other cases like Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe against Espanyol and Federico Valverde last night saw players booked for gestural protests with no verbal involvement in any sense.

At this point, it is clear why Los Blancos are heavily disappointed with the refereeing and feel personally targeted by the match officials’ decisions. It remains to be seen how the situation evolves.
