Real Madrid and Atlético have just played out a 1-1 draw at the Bernabéu as Diego Simeone’s men challenged their Madrid rivals for a place at the top of the table.
The match took a controversial turn in the first half following a penalty awarded to Atlético for Aurélien Tchouameni treading on the foot of Samuel Lino in the penalty area.
Many fans believe the penalty was very light and shouldn’t have been given, and the timing couldn’t be worse given the recent refereeing controversy involving Los Blancos.
The match kicked back into life again in the second half, as Kylian Mbappé capitalised on a Jude Bellingham rebounded shot to level the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
Real Madrid controlled much of the match, but failed to make their dominance count, as they remain just one point ahead of their city rivals atop the La Liga table.
Atlético Madrid may see the result as a missed opportunity, as a Real Madrid side that looked defensively weak on paper looked ripe for the taking.
Real Madrid now turn their attention to their midweek fixture against Manchester City in the Champions League, while Atlético have the week off having progressed directly to the last 16 of the competition.
