Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has produced arguably the most memorable performance of his international career after inspiring England to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Real Madrid star delivered a sensational display at the Estadio Azteca, scoring twice in just 98 seconds to help secure England’s passage into the quarter-finals despite the Three Lions playing with ten men for more than 40 minutes.

For many, it was the defining moment of Jude Bellingham’s England career, with the midfielder taking centre stage on one of football’s biggest occasions.

Bellingham matches Diego Maradona

The latest chapter in Jude Bellingham World Cup history unfolded in spectacular fashion as the midfielder struck twice during the opening half to put England in complete control.

His goals arrived within a remarkable 98-second period, giving England a two-goal advantage and setting the tone for an unforgettable encounter at the Azteca Stadium.

The achievement also carried historical significance.

By scoring a brace in Mexico City, Bellingham became the first player to net two goals in a FIFA World Cup match at the iconic venue since Diego Maradona accomplished the feat against Belgium during the 1986 semi-finals.

Furthermore, at just 23 years of age, the midfielder has now scored five goals for England at the World Cup (2022 and 2026), which is already more than iconic names such as Bobby Charlton, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Beckham, Glenn Hoddle and Paul Gascoigne.

Best night of Bellingham’s international career

After England beat Mexico at the World Cup, Bellingham did not hide his emotions when reflecting on an evening he described as the finest of his career with the national team.

Speaking after the match, the midfielder was quoted by Mundo Deportivo as saying, “It was the best night of my international career.

Simply incredible. I’m struggling to find the words.”

He also explained the unpredictable nature of the contest, which featured goals, penalties and a red card.

“Between the goals, the penalty we conceded, the one we scored, and the red card, it’s hard to keep a cool head.

“It was a chaotic match, and we have to give credit to Mexico, who played very well… But our team showed character tonight, and I’m proud of them,” he added.
