According to a recent report from AS, it has been learned that the France national team coach Didier Deschamps is considering deploying Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga as a left-back at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although Camavinga is naturally a central midfielder, he has experience in defence, having played at left-back on several occasions under Carlo Ancelotti last season.
However, that switch has generally been used only in urgent situations.
Notably, Camavinga recently returned to the French squad following a lengthy injury layoff, which underlines Deschamps’ faith in the youngster.
In the recent match against Azerbaijan, he played in his natural central midfield role, but discussions in France suggest he could be deployed at left-back depending on his performance and the team’s needs.
France’s options on the left side are limited. The outlet mentions that neither Theo Hernandez nor Lucas Digne, considered first-choice candidates, have offered the level of consistency required to start in every match.

As a result, Camavinga’s versatility could prove decisive. Although he has admitted he does not enjoy playing in defence, his ability to adapt could enhance his chances of making the final squad for the World Cup.
For now, the focus is on Camavinga regaining full fitness. Since returning from injury, he has barely played 80 minutes this season.
He made his first appearance for Real Madrid this season on September 20 against Espanyol, but has not been a regular starter due to a thigh problem and an ankle issue, which slowed the start of his campaign.
With midfield injuries mounting, Deschamps has called Camavinga up for the October international break.
Depending on his performance, Camavinga might be called upon to return to left-back, a position that could prove crucial in securing his spot for the 2026 World Cup.
