Real Madrid’s 2026 will get off to a rocky start, for bad news has already begun to roll in just days after the team returned to training.

This time, it is the team’s top scorer and best player Kylian Mbappe who has been diagnosed with a setback in his knee which will keep him out for three weeks.

All signs, thus, point to Xabi Alonso approaching the Spanish Super Cup without the talisman and the situation is only further complicated by the fact that Real Madrid only recently sanctioned the loan move of Endrick to Lyon.

No reversion planned

With Mbappe injured now and the lacuna in the forward position partially revealed, there was speculation over whether Real Madrid would retract Endrick’s transfer and call him back.

Defensa Central, however, clarifies that Los Blancos have no such intention and that the Brazilian’s loan move in France will continue as initially planned. No changes are expected despite the setback.

The administration at the club do not see Mbappe’s potential three-week sentence on the sideline as major enough to retract the completed move and hope for him to return to action at the earliest. They say internally that it is not a ‘long-reaching injury.’

It will thus be interesting to see how Alonso manages Real Madrid’s frontline in the talisman’s absence.

Gonzalo Garcia would appear to be the best placed to replace him, but one can not rule out the possibility of Rodrygo taking up a central role either.

Mbappe, meanwhile, will continue to work hard to return at the earliest and has set the target of making it back for the Super Cup. There is, however, not too much optimism about the same.
