Earlier today, Real Madrid legend Marcelo announced his retirement from the game of football via a video on his social media channels.
The iconic former left-back opted to hang up his boots after a glorious career, the most of which he spent at Real Madrid, winning a bunch of trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Regarded as one of the greatest modern-day left-backs, Marcelo is a beloved figure at Real Madrid and following his announcement, the club president Florentino Perez sent out a touching message for the 36-year-old.
“Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football, and we have had the privilege of enjoying him for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and will always be his home,” said Perez.
Meanwhile Real Madrid, as a club, also sent their best wishes to their icon while highlighting all his achievements as part of the official statement.
“Following Marcelo’s announcement of his retirement as a professional football player, Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection,” the statement read.
“Marcelo is part of the history of Real Madrid and is one of the great legends of our club and of world football.”
Concluding, the statement said: “Real Madrid wishes him and his entire family the best of luck in this new stage of his life.”
