Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is currently dealing with injury problems, but his challenges are not limited to the pitch.

Off the field, he has taken a major hit as Caen, the French club he bought last year, has officially been relegated to the third tier of French football.

The disappointing news was confirmed after Caen suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to Martigues, which sealed their drop from Ligue 2 to the Championnat National.

Facing the wrath

The situation turned tense inside the stadium during the match, as angry fans made their frustration known. By the 17th minute, when Caen were already trailing 0-2, supporters raised a large banner aimed at the club’s leadership and players.

The message was direct and aggressive, stating that both the management and the squad were to blame for the poor season. “Management, players: all guilty, all out.”

Earlier in the season, in January, a group of ultras had already targeted Mbappe specifically, warning him that Caen is not something to be used for personal gain.

As the match neared its end, the atmosphere inside the stadium grew even more hostile. A new banner went up from the ultras, claiming that they are the heart of the club while calling out the players and board for ruining the identity

“Malherbe (as the French club is also known) is us, the s**t is you.”

Relegation marks a bitter moment for the Mbappe project

The relegation to the third division is a heavy blow for a club that has previously enjoyed ten seasons in Ligue 1. It is also a massive disappointment for Mbappe, who, along with his family, acquired 80% of the club’s ownership just last July.

The deal was valued at around €15 million, with expectations that the club would grow stronger both on and off the field.

Instead, the season has turned into a nightmare. Beyond the embarrassment of relegation, the drop in division will severely impact the value of the club.

Revenues from television rights, sponsorship, and ticket sales are expected to take a major hit, making it a financially difficult time for Caen and Mbappe.
