FC Barcelona and Real Madrid players were involved in a heated scuffle in the dying stages and after the final whistle of the first El Clasico of the season last month.

The game, which ended 2-1 in favour of the Merengues at the Santiago Bernabeu, had an added edge to it after Lamine Yamal’s comments directed at Xabi Alonso’s side, wherein he jokingly claimed that they ‘steal and complain’.

Dani Carvajal and Lamine were involved in a heated exchange at full-time, before Thibaut Courtois got involved and things escalated with several players entering the fray.

Now, sharing his thoughts on the incident in an interview with COPE, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has claimed that he has no problems with Lamine and even went on to back the youngster to achieve greatness at Barcelona.

“For me, Lamine is a great player and will be a player who will mark an era at Barça, I think, but well, in the end he spoke in a certain way, he heated up the game a bit and obviously the press jumped on him,” Courtois noted.

“Carva or Huijsen are in the national team and I think there’s zero problem with Lamine. It’s something that stays on the field and there’s nothing going on off it,” he further added.

“If I see Lamine in a restaurant tomorrow, I’ll say hello. I don’t think there’s any problem between Lamine and me,” the Belgian goalkeeper confessed.

As for the comments itself, the Real Madrid veteran superstar insisted that the Merengues used it as motivation, especially after having lost all Clasico encounters last season.

“When we’re feeling really intense and full of adrenaline, sometimes you say things that you later regret, ‘Well, that wasn’t necessary.’ But I think that’s what a Clasico is like,” noted Courtois.

“Sometimes we need that atmosphere too, and I think that after last year when we lost four times, we also need that fire from an enemy again, and we have to go after them because even when they’ve won, they haven’t shown us any respect,” he noted.
