Defensa Central claims Real Madrid are considering Sunderland defender Trai Hume as a low-cost right-back option this summer.

The report says the club are assessing cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Dani Carvajal expected to depart. Hume is listed alongside Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson, with a suggested price of about €22 million, roughly £19 million.

It certainly appears unlikely at this stage, yet it underlines Hume’s rising reputation after an excellent campaign for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a consistent performer under Régis Le Bris, valued for his versatility, intensity and reliability.

Hume came through Ballymena United and Linfield, making his senior Linfield debut in April 2019. A loan at hometown club Ballymena brought 37 appearances and six goals before he returned to Linfield as first-choice right-back.

Sunderland signed him from Linfield in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He debuted in a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town the following month and became a regular during 2022-23.

He received a contract extension in 2023, then signed a long-term deal after Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, tying him to the club until summer 2030. Hume also scored his first Premier League goal earlier this season in a 4-3 loss to Aston Villa.
